Esther Cromwell

Founder

Esther Cromwell was the visionary founder of Avendelle Assisted Living and a pioneering leader in residential senior care. Her life’s work was dedicated to creating a better way for older adults to age—with dignity, independence, compassion, and the comfort of home.

Originally from Sierra Leone, Esther’s journey embodied courage, perseverance, and the entrepreneurial spirit. After immigrating to the United States, she combined her passion for serving others with an unwavering commitment to excellence, ultimately building one of the most respected residential assisted living organizations in the Southeast. As a woman of color, immigrant, wife, mother, and business leader, she broke barriers while inspiring countless entrepreneurs to pursue businesses that make a meaningful difference in people’s lives.

Esther’s passion for senior care began through a deeply personal experience. When an elderly widowed neighbor needed assistance, she discovered there were few quality options that provided both exceptional care and the warmth of a true home. Determined to change that reality, she opened the first Avendelle Assisted Living home in 2005, establishing a residential care model centered on personalized attention, safety, comfort, and family. Rather than institutional settings, Esther believed seniors deserved to live in beautiful neighborhood homes where every resident was known, valued, and cared for as an individual.

Over the next two decades, Esther and her husband and co-founder, Douglas Cromwell, built, renovated, and operated dozens of residential assisted living homes throughout North Carolina. Together they developed a proven operating model focused on three core principles: Living Safely, Living Independently, and Living Comfortably. Their commitment to personalized care, low caregiver-to-resident ratios, and home-like environments established Avendelle as a recognized leader in residential assisted living.

As Avendelle continued to grow, Esther expanded her vision by launching a national franchise program, empowering entrepreneurs across the country to replicate the same high standards of care in their own communities. She believed business success and compassionate service were inseparable, mentoring franchise owners to build profitable organizations while improving the lives of seniors and their families. Under her leadership, Avendelle became known not only for exceptional resident care but also for innovation, operational excellence, and a commitment to raising the standard for residential assisted living nationwide.

In 2025, Esther passed away following complications from surgery. Even in her final days, her thoughts remained focused on the future of Avendelle and the families it serves. She expressed her wish that Avendelle would continue to be a beacon for entrepreneurs and a place where seniors could live safely, with dignity, compassion, and love.

Today, Esther Cromwell’s legacy lives on through every Avendelle and Majestic Residences home, every caregiver she inspired, every entrepreneur she mentored, and every senior whose life has been enriched by her vision. Her belief that exceptional care begins with treating every resident like family continues to guide the organization she founded and serves as a lasting reminder that one person’s compassion can transform an entire industry.
